Pollutants found to exceed the standards in many cities are suspended particulate matter and respirable suspended particulate matter. Results of additional pollutants such as benzene and carbon monoxide monitored in Delhi and ammonia in six cities have also been presented.

The report presents results of ambient air quality monitoring carried out during the year 2008 at various monitoring stations under NAMP. Four criteria pollutants namely sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, respirable suspended particulate matter and
suspended particulate matter have been monitored regularly at various monitoring locations. The air quality is described in terms of low, moderate, high and critical levels based on an exceedence factor. The pollutants that are exceeding the
standards in many cities are suspended particulate matter and respirable suspended particulate matter. Results of additional pollutants such as benzene and carbon monoxide monitored in Delhi and ammonia in six cities have also been presented. The next few chapters present details of the National Air Quality Monitoring Programme and major findings during the year 2008. Also detailed are the initiatives taken for air pollution control.
