Analysis of the comprehensive EIA of minor port of POSCO in Orissa

The company claims to have carried out potential site analysis for the port (and the steel plant). Their short-listed sites were Jatadharmohan creek (JMC) near Paradip and Dhamra port. Dhamra had already been granted to Dhamra Port Company Limited (joint venture Tata Steel and L&T) in 1999. To consider an already granted port as a potential site does not reflect a serious exercise on the part of the company. Thus, the only site they did identify was the creek. The environmental and social implications of choosing JMC as the port site have clearly not been considered and is based on purely economical considerations such as distance to the steel plant.
