Order of the Supreme Court of India regarding grant of permission to M/s. Essel Mining to resume mining in Odisha, 04/10/2019
Order of the Supreme Court of India in the matter of Common Cause Vs Union of India & Others dated 04/10/2019 regarding grant of permission to M/s. Essel Mining to resume mining in Odisha, since they have paid the entire amount of penalty and interest as per the order of the SC. Further, the mineral-based industry has also got all clearances. The case related to violation of Mineral Concession Rule 1960 and Mines and Mineral (Development and Regulation) Act 1957.
The Central Empowered Committee (CEC) in its report to the SC has stated that the permission to mine should be restricted to only 134 hectares. Meanwhile, the counsel for the applicant has submitted that permission should not be granted because it's not clear whether M/s. Essel Mining have gone beyond the maximum limit of 1000 hectares and the matter has been referred to a Commission comprising of Justice G. S. Singhvi and A. R. Dave, and the report is expected soon.
The Supreme Court grants permission to Essel Mining and after the Commission's report a decision on the matter would be made.
