Large-scale farming of flash-flood tolerant varieties of Aman crop can produce an additional six million tonnes paddy annually to make the country completely self-reliant in food production and a rice exporting nation.

Rangpur Dinajpur Rural Service (RDRS) is trying to popularise the cultivation of Parija rice as an additional crop in between Aman and Boro in greater Rangpur region.
Parija is one of the disappeared Aus varieties of rice.
Farmers in the region used to cultivate the early harvest variety during Aus season. Aman and Boro farmers are still ignored about Parija cultivation.

Food and Disaster Manag-ement Minister Dr M Abdur Razzak Thursday said the government has undertaken a long-term programme involving about Taka 8,000 crore or US dollar 1.1 billion for effective disaster management and reducing risks and losses.

The recent flash floods damaged standing crops including T-Aman and vegetables worth Taka 136.76 crore in Rangpur Agriculture Zone (RAZ), official sources in the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said here today.

Flash floods submerged some 20 villages, affecting over 100,000 people, as a flood embankment was breached in several places at Dakope upazila, Khulna, officials said on Saturday.
