Two U.S. spacecraft were crashed into a lunar crater on Friday but scientists said it was too early to say whether the mission to search for supplies of water on the Moon had been a success.
NASA, which is hoping to find sufficient quantities of water to use as fuel for space exploration, said it could take two months to make a conclusive assessment of what was found.
Alunar event sceduled for 5pm (IST) on Friday could be straight out a sc-fi thriller. Zooming at a velocity of nearly 8,000 kmph, a 2,305kg Nasa spacecraft known as Centaur will slam onto the south pole of the Moon with such force that it will throw up 350 tonnes of lunar soil and debris and create a 13-feet-deep crate.
International space missions have found ice on the moon and more evidence of ice on Mars -- good news for future settlements and also for scientists looking for extraterrestrial life.
Four reports published in Friday's issue of the journal Science show clear evidence of water, likely frozen, on the desert surfaces of both the Moon and Mars.
