The contamination of soil and groundwater at the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal has nothing to do with the 1984 gas leak disaster, according to a study released on Thursday by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute. Instead, the toxic wastes were dumped over a much longer period between 1969 and 1984.

India at the two-year sentence given to 86-year-old Keshub Mahindra, a respected industrialist, in the Bhopal gas leak case. Mahindra was chairman of Union Carbide when it happened and there has been a movement of sorts at the apex of Indian industry to get him off.

Union Environment and Forest Minister Jairam Ramesh will visit Bhopal on July 9. Ramesh will meet Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on July 9.
