Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi has rejected a request by the environment and forest ministry to relocate Gir lions outside Gujarat.
Minister of state for environment and forests Jairam Ramesh said he had personally raised the question of shifting lions from the Gir forests to the Kuno-Palpur wildlife sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh, but the chief minister said no.

Sasan (Gir): With the lion census due this year, the forest department in coordination with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) will study the corridor movement of the lions.

Wild Cats Between 5-9 Years Will Be Tracked

Despite Gujarat being in no mood to allow shifting of any of its Asiatic lions, the Madhya Pradesh government has spent over Rs. 14.53 crore to relocate 1,543 families in the Kuno Palpur Wildlife Sanctuary being prepared as an alternative habitat for the king of the jungle.

Ahmedabad: The state government in the Assembly on Friday proclaimed that the Asiatic lion which died in Gir recently had jumped off the bridge and died of heommorage.

GANDHINAGAR: The Gujarat government has decided to install microchips under the skin of the lions in the Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, the only abode of the Asiatic lions, to track their movements.

The decision was taken following a series of lion killings, both natural and accidental, an official spokesperson said on Wednesday.

AMRELI: An eight-year-old lion was found dead in Dhari forest range of Gir Wildlife Sanctuary in the second such incident in less than a week, forest officials said on Tuesday.
Body recovered

The body was recovered a couple of days ago by some villagers in Khamba taluka.

The Centre has proposed Project Lion, a conservation project on the lines of Project Tiger, to protect the last remaining Asiatic lions in India.

A 2005 census found that there were 359 Asiatic lions left, all at Gujarat's Gir wildlife sanctuary.
