GMDC has put on hold its plans to set up indigenous coal-based thermal power plants with an estimated investment of Rs 20,000 crore to generate 4,000 MW.

LONDON stock market-listed Vedanta Resources has won the bauxite mining bid of Gujarat governmentowned Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC). The Anil Agrawal-owned company will get 5 lakh tonnes of bauxite from the GMDC-owned mines.

With ample supply from the Gujarat mines, Vedanta can run its Orissa-based refinery with the fullest capacity.

The Gujarat government has allotted Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation's (GMDC) Naini coal block in Orissa, to Adani and Torrent groups, a top company official has said.

Both Guajarat-based companies will have 50 per cent share each in the block, which was awarded to the state-run GMDC by the government of India in 2006.
