THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A special team headed by Vigilance officer (Survey) Biju Prabhakar will conduct a detailed investigation into the land encroachments in Munnar, Revenue Minister K P Rajendran said in a statement here on Thursday.

Thiruvananthapuram: The issue of encroachments in Munnar on Wednesday returned to haunt the CPM-led Left Democratic Front government in the state with Kerala high court seeking a report in this regard.

Vaiko (V Gopalaswamy), general secretary of Tamil Nadu's Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetta Kazhakam (MDMK), threatened Kerala with 'economic blockade' if it went ahead with the plan for construction of a new dam near the 113-year-old one at Mullaperiyar in Idukki district, along the border between the two States.

IDUKKI: Kerala will submit a detailed project report to the Centre over the proposed construction of a new dam at Mullaperiyar in place of the existing structure within six months.

This was stated by N K Parameswaran Nair, convenor of the three-member Mullaperiyar cell recently set up by the state government, after visiting the spot today where the survey for the new dam had been completed.

The water level in the 113-year-old masonry dam at Mullaperiyar on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border remained just two points below the maximum permitted level of 136 feet escalating panic among the people living on the banks of River Periyar in Idukki district of Kerala.

KOCHI: The High Court on Thursday issued an order banning the mining of river sand in Idukki district. Disposing off a petition filed by the Upputhara grama panchayat authorities against unauthorised sand mining, Justice Thottathil B Radhakrishnan said that neither the State Government nor the district collector had issued any guideline for sand mining in Idukki.

The environmental monitoring programme on water quality carried out by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment and the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management has thrown light on the water quality parameters of the river basins in the State.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Cabinet on Wednesday decided to form three high-level committees to implement the Idukki package, recommended by the M.S. Swaminathan Commission, to rejuvenate agriculture in Idukki district.
