The Orissa govern ment on Sunday claimed that it has convinced anti-Posco groups to agree to a social-economic survey of the site for Posco India's 12-million tonne steel project in Jagatsinghpurdistrict.

Anti-Posco groups, however, still held that the demand to shift the project to another site was` non-negotiable'.

Tension prevailed at the Posco project site on Thursday as a team of armed police officials entered Gobindpur village under the Dhinkia gram panchayat to arrest Abhaya Sahoo, the president of Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS).


Tension prevailed on Tuesday at the proposed Posco project site near port town Paradip as eight platoons of armed police conducted flag march apparently to create a fear psychosis among the local people ahead of the survey work at Dhinkia and Nuagoan panchayats.

In a setback to the five-year long anti-Posco agitation, about 50 people of a village, hitherto known for their opposition, today supported the mega steel plant project and asked the authorities to take up survey work in their area, officials said.

The police also arrested two persons on the charges of obstructing government officials from discharging their duties.
