JORHAT, Aug 2: The current wave of floods has caused the inundation of thousands of hectares of agricultural land in the district. According to statistics, updated till July 30, available with the District Agriculture Office here, a total 24,349 farming families of 219 villages spread across the three subdivisions have been affected by the deluge.

Though there was a slight fall in the level of water in major rivers, the overall flood situation in the State remained grim today also with the Brahmaputra flowing above the danger level at three places. The mighty river is flowing above the warning level at three other places and most of its tributaries also are flowing above the warning level at various sites. However, the flood scenario in the river island Majuli was reported this afternoon to be stable.

Severe erosion threatens north-west Jorhat villages
JORHAT, July 22: About 20 km from here, the residents of Neol Gaon and 33 other villages under Dergaon Legislative Assembly Constituency in north-west Jorhat are waging a grim struggle against severe erosion which is threatening to uproot them. The Brahmaputra river, which flows close to these villages, is dangerously poised to breach the strategic dyke running along from Khutiapota check bund to Negheriting-Rangagara.

JORHAT, July 21: The Jorhat district committee of the Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) has begun the first of a series of tree plantation programmes to clean and green the environment the youth body planted saplings at the side of the Mallow Ali on Saturday and the event was inaugurated by upper Assam conservator of forest JM Kuli.

Fresh wave of floods this year is creating havoc in many parts of upper Asom, particularly in Jorhat, Lakhimpur and Dibrugarh districts. The Central Water Commission said the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Nimati Ghat in Jorhat. CWC sources said water levels of the Brahmaputra will cross the danger mark if rainfall continues at Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh. "In eventuality of waters of the Brahmaputra rising in the next few days, the famed Majuli island would be the first to be inundated,' CWC sources said.

Jorhat: It's a reversal of roles in the man-animal conflict. Villagers at Koibartagaon in Assam's Sivasagar district were on Monday caught while preparing to eat an eight-month-old leopard. This is not the first time such an incident has taken place in upper Assam. Since April, the state, which has some of the country's finest animal sanctuaries, has seen people killing and eating leopards in revenge for their cattle being killed by the animals.

The All Assam Students' Union today queered the pitch for the speedy execution of the anti-erosion works by the Brahmaputa Board to protect the geographical area of Majuli. Office-bearers of All Jorhat District Students' Union (AJDSU) have also expressed serious displeasure over the nature of work done by the central agency, entrusted with the task of controlling floods and erosion in the river island, so far.

In a bid to resolve the worsening power crisis in the State, the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has chosen 54 interior villages of Asom including six in Jorhat to be powered by alternative source of energy.
