Meghalaya has imposed ban on chicken and other poultry products import following outbreak of avian flu in neighbouring Assam.

GUWAHATI, Dec 9

Guwahati: With bird flu spreading to at least three districts since it was first detected in a village in Hajo block in Kamrup (Rural) district in November, authorities in Assam have imposed a ban on inter-district transportation of poultry.

The avian flu virus has now been detected in the diseased poultry populations in pockets of Barpeta and Nalbari districts too. Earlier, the virus was detected among the diseased poultry populations in three pockets of Kamrup and Kamrup (Metro) districts.

Dreaded bird flu disease has spread to new places as Bhopal- based High Security Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (HSADL) has confirmed presence of the virus of the dreaded bird flu among the diseased backyard fowls of Sarpara and Patgaon villages of Kamrup district. This the second case of outbreak of the dreaded disease caused by the H5N1 virus in the State.

GUWAHATI, Dec 2: After Hajo, bird flu has been confirmed in Mirza, Sarpara, Rangamati, Uparhali ete areas in Palasbari Revenue Circle in Kamrup district. According to Kamrup DC RC Jain, samples of dead birds that had been sent to Bhopal and Pune laboratories tested positive for avian flu.

Consequently, India has notified the World Organisation for Animal Health(OIE), about the outbreak of the disease and has lost its bird flu-free status.

Fresh outbreak of the dreaded bird flu disease of poultry at Hajo in Kamrup (Rural) district of Assam is expected to hit export of poultry products though it may not have much impact on the domestic market, feel poultry experts.

GUWAHATI, Dec 1: As a precautionary measure, sale and movement of poultry birds have been banned in Kamrup district from today, as bird flu is suspected to have spread over new areas, including Sarpara (near Mirza), Rangamati and Bongra Kachuniapara villages in the district, said Kamrup Deputy Commissioner RC Jain.
