Innovate Rural Electrification

THE International Energy Agency (IEA) has highlighted that over 20% of the global population or 1.4 billion people lack access to electricity, which hinders economic and social development. Here in India, the grim reality is that almost half the population in rural areas has little or no supply of power.

With a view of reducing consumption of electricity as well as the global warming, Mysore Palace Board has decided to replace 635 Sodium Vapour and other electric lamps with LED lamps at an estimated cost of ` 77 lakh.

This would conserve as many as 20,000 units of power per month as well as save ` 1.5 lakh which otherwise would have been spent on monthly electricity bill.

Punjab is set to introduce LED (light emitting diode) lighting in all five cities in the state, beginning from Ludhiana, even as the process of replacement of conventional lighting with CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) will start in a few months with Powercom, the state electricity utility, registering with the Bureau of Energy for this purpose.

The state government has agreed in principle to install third-generation and ultramodern LED lights in the areas under all the municipal corporations in the state. For this, open tenders will be invited from various agencies and the agency quoting best rates will be assigned the job.

New Delhi: The second edition of the LED EXPO 2009 was declared open to the public by the secretary, new and renewable energy ministry, Deepak Gupta, on Friday.
