Four children died and scores of others were hospitalised on Tuesday due to outbreak of measles in South Waziristan tribal region.

Chief Minister’s Special Assistant on Health Khwaja Salman Rafique said on Monday seven children had died of measles while 1,476 cases of the disease had surfaced so far in the province in January.

Nine children died of measles in Jacobabad, Ghotki and Kandhkot-Kashmore districts during the last 24 hours, reports received here on Sunday evening said.

Two more children died of measles at Tangwani near here on Sunday. The deceased were identified as two years old Shahid and five years old Jameel.

Around 13,00 cases of measles have been reported in different parts of Punjab, mostly in Lahore, during the current surveillance drive.

The measles death toll has reached over 460 in the province, as four more children died in Kamber-Shahdadkot and Jacobabad districts within 24 hours.

Families say four children have died of measles in Basti Pachaar of Union Council Bait Wasawa Shumali. They say 20 other children of the village are also suffering from measles.

With no effective check on measles outbreak in sight, Sindh saw deaths of nine more children in Dadu, Jacobabad and Shaheed Benazirabad districts on Friday.
