In the wake of 35 per cent drop in bauxite production in the aftermath of the Naxalite attack on its Panchapatmali mines, National Aluminium Company (Nalco) fears a one-third drop in its alumina output after 16 days, when the navratna PSU will run out of bauxite.

MUMBAI, April 21 (Reuters) - India's state-run National Aluminium Co Ltd (NALCO) (NALU.BO) is in talks with mine workers to have them return to work after a shutdown, which could take up to a week, the company's top official said on Tuesday.

An eight-hour gun-battle between security forces and Naxalites at the Panchapatmali bauxite mines of the National Aluminium Company Ltd in Koraput district of Orissa ended early morning today, leaving 10 jawans of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and four Naxalites dead.

The cement companies, which have signed MoUs with the Orissa government, for setting up of cement units in the state, will be asked to utilise 25 percent of the fly ash generated by them in various forms.

This will be a mandatory condition for them and the Orissa government is likely to take a decision in this regard in next couple of months, said the sources.

The Orissa government has remaining licence to the National Aluminium Company (Nalco). The state government said the company can be given a prospective licence on the Potangi bauxite mines only if it agrees to give the Sashubahumali Pasangamali reserve to the Orissa Mining Corporation (OMC).

The Centre may bail out National Aluminium Company (Nalco), whose 1.6 million tonne alumina refinery in Orissa is on the verge of closure due to acute shortage of coal.

The Union Coal Ministry is understood to have decided to ask Mahanadi Coalfield (MCL) to supply coal to the alumina unit so that Nalco gets over the problem.

National Aluminium Co (Nalco), a leading producer of alumina/ aluminium in the country, is facing a major coal shortage.

Currently, the company is running alumina refinery at half its capacity and may be forced to shut down the unit in a few days if the situation does not improve.

The company is incurring a daily cash loss of Rs 2.5 crore due to slashing of production.
