Gangtok: Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling elaborated on some of the "unprecedented measures" introduced by his government for the advancement of the state at the National Development Council meeting in New Delhi.

Gangtok, July 12: Setting an example, former Forest and Land Use Minister T Lachungpa today said he has planted around 2,500 saplings on his private land, as part of his individual contribution to the success of the State Green Mission.

Gangtok, July 12: Trekking enthusiasts who litter mountain trails with disposables in Sikkim now have to cough up a fine of Rs 5,000.

The fine will be imposed on tourists travelling along the famed Geochala and Dzongri high altitude trails of the Kanchenjungha National Park in West and North districts of the state.

The State Government has set the target to make Sikkim the first-ever Poverty Free State of the country within the next four years. A comprehensive programme, involving all the Government departments will be undertaken for the purpose with special thrust on the poverty-stricken villages.

The Himalayan State of Sikkim has made excellent progress in providing electricity and drinking water to its citizens, according to the latest National Family Health Survey for Sikkim.

A total of 92 per cent of the 1,11,830 households in the State have electricity and 78 per cent drinking water.

Gangtok, June 15: Sikkim chief minister Pawan Chamling today said some of the difficult decisions taken by his government to preserve the forests in the state had yielded a four per cent rise in the green cover.
