BHUBANESWAR: A sanctuary for the wildlife till not so long ago, Similipal Tiger Reserve and its adjoining forests are slowly turning into a den for the hunters, both organised and traditional. At least six elephants have been reported poached in and around the famous tiger habitat in the last few weeks.

BHUBANESWAR: Wildlife Society of Orissa, a non-government organisation, here on Tuesday demanded a CBI investigation into the recent mass killings of elephants in Simlipal Tiger Reserve.

WSO alleged that there were reports of 12 elephants being killed in Similipal and attempts were made to destroy poaching evidences.

On 3 June 2010, the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) constituted an independent, two-member team to asses the ground situation at Simlipal Tiger Reserve in Orissa, in the wake of a recent spate of elephant deaths there. The elephant carcasses were first detected in April 2010.

BHUBANESWAR: Stage is set for the tiger census to kick off in Orissa.

Beginning May 8, the Wildlife Wing will start the first phase of enumeration and hope that the last census outcomes were an aberration, if nothing else.

BARIPADA: In a major boost to anti-poaching surveillance in Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR), Worldwide Fund for Nature - India (WWF-India) has extended its assistance to the reserve by providing some essential equipment and gears.

Diwakar Sharma, associate director, Species Conservation Programme, WWFIndia, handed over the essential equipment and gears to STR authorities on Saturday.

BHUBANESWAR: The annual tiger enumeration is set to commence in March and this time around, camera trap technique will not be the only method to be used to count the big cats.

BHUBANESWAR: Its wildlife habitats facing growing pressure, the State Government plans to go in for GIS mapping of the protected areas along with a strengthened anti-poaching setup and identification of the boundaries.

The plan covers all the wildlife sanctuaries but Similipal and Satkosia will receive special attention being the two identified Project Tiger areas in the State.

BHUBANESWAR: The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests has come forward to implement a new project for tiger conservation in Similipal Tiger Reserve by involving the RBS Foundation of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group.

BARIPADA: The Similipal tiger reserve (STR) has been included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves by UNESCO.
