Order of the Madras High Court regarding welfare of stray animals, Tamil Nadu, 09/06/2021

Order of the Madras High Court in the matter of V. E. Shiva Vs The Principal Secretary, Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries & Others dated 09/06/2021. The matter related to welfare of stray animals.

The HC took note of the letter, June 8, 2021 of the Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services filed in the court about the various steps taken for the welfare of stray animals during the Covid-19 pandemic induced lockdown. The court said that even though the petition was purely for the purpose of providing relief to stray animals during the period of lockdown, the Animal Husbandry department of the state should chalk out a plan for the general treatment of stray animals and providing for a scientific and humane approach even during normal times.

"A comprehensive plan dealing with vaccinating stray dogs and cats, if necessary, or collaring them or the like should also be thought of in the best interest of both the animals and the human population that they come to contact with,' the Madras High Court order, June 9, 2021 said.
