Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding cleaning and rejuvenating river Ganga, 11/04/2017
Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of M.C. Mehta Vs. Union of India & Ors. dated 11/04/2017 regarding cleaning and rejuvenating river Ganga.
In futherance to NGT Order of 30th March, 2017 senior officers from the Ministries, State of Uttar Pradesh and other stakeholders including Central Pollution Control Board held a meeting. Some of the decisions taken were:
- The Government of Uttar Pradesh has, in principle, taken the decision to shift the tannery industries from Jajmau.
- The state of Uttar Pradesh would also present the following information before NGT: i. What should be the minimum environmental flow of river Ganga in Segment-B. ii. Whether there is excessive extraction of groundwater in this section and/or whether the water being diverted into the various Ganga Canals should be regulated so as to help maintenance of minimum flow of the river.
- All the stakeholders also agreed to the ‘Polluter Pays Principle’ application for control of industrial pollution.
