Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding pollution of Chandrabhaga and Bakreswar rivers by Bakreshwar Thermal Power Plant, 13/07/2015

The National Green Tribunal’s eastern zone bench on 13 July, 2015 issued a cause notice to Bakreshwar thermal power plant, asking why it should not be penalised for dumping fly-ash and polluting Chandrabhaga and Bakreshwar rivers in West Bengal

On the issue as of “polluter pay”, the Tribunal questioned why the power plant will not be liable to pay a penalty of Rs.5.0 crores for causing environmental degradation by putting fly ash to the river Chandrabhaga and Bakreshwar and also causing severe injury to the environment and the entire locality and inhabitants thereof and the animals who are dependent on the river water.

The Tribunal also directed Chairman, West Bengal Power Development Corporation to file an affidavit disclosing the details of methodology, procedure and mechanism for lifting the fly ash from the river beds of Chandrabhaga and Bakreswar by two weeks.
