Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding pollution of river Churni, Nadia District of West Bengal, 06/08/2018
Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Tribunal on its own Motion Vs. Union of India. The proceedings were initiated on an allegation of severe pollution of river Churni passing through Nadia district in the State of West Bengal. The untreated effluents from factories were being released into river Mathabhanga which was joining river Churni. The discharge was also taking place in Bangladesh from where the river is coming.
NGT notes that for the last almost two years "beyond stating that a DPR has been prepared and financial assistance has been sought, no action has been taken on the ground level and the Ranaghat Municipality continues to dump pollution". Court grants one month time to the Chief Secretary of West Bengal Government to ensure that real and effective steps for setting up the Effluent Treatment Plant are taken, failing which the NGT will be left with no option but to direct prosecution and other coercive measures against the Chief Secretary.
