Report filed by the Kerala State Pollution Control Board, Thrissur, Kerala on the operation of electroplating units in Edakkunni, 24/12/2021
Report filed by the Environmental Engineer, Kerala State Pollution Control Board, District Office, Thrissur in Application No. 20 of 2016 (Southern Zone). The matter related to pollution of groundwater due to the operation of electroplating units, Edakkunni, Thrissur district, Kerala.
The Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) informed the SPCB that to identify the source of contamination of well water, the tracer study would be most effective if conducted during summer season. "This is because there will be more draft of water which leads to faster movement of groundwater during summer", CWRDM said.
The electroplating units were inspected by SPCB, November 19, 2021. Two of the units were not working during the time of inspection. The effluent treatment plant of the electroplating units were found functional and the treated water was found being reused in the process.
It is submitted that even though these units have zero discharge, standards have been specified for the quality of treated effluent in the consent to operate, as a matter of abundant caution. Treated water samples were collected and forwarded to lab for analysis and the results are awaited, the report dated December 24, 2021 said.
