Question raised in Lok Sabha on Increase in slum population, 16/12/2015. As per information provided by the Office of Registrar General of India (RGI), slum population in Delhi has decreased from 18,51,231 (Census 2001) to 16,17,239 (Census 2011). Details of slum population of million plus Cities (as per Census 2001 & Census 2011) are at Annexure-I. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation constituted a Technical Group (TG-12) on estimation of urban housing shortage of the country for the 12th Five Year Plan (2012- 17). As per the report of this Committee, the total housing shortage estimated at the beginning of 12th Plan Period i.e. in 2012, was 18.78 million. Out of the total urban housing shortage of 18.78 million, 10.55 million (56.18%) is in Economically Weaker Section (EWS) Category, 7.41 million (39.44%) is in Lower Income Group (LIG) and
the rest of 0.82 million (4.38%) is in the Middle Income Group and above category. State/UT-wise details are at Annexure-II.
