mumbai taxi-owners got a reprieve when the Bombay high court ordered that vehicles with registrations endorsed after the alteration of engines would be given till March 7 for an inspection by the Regional Transport Office ( rto ).

The court ordered that these commercial vehicles with renovated engines would be inspected by a competent authority to check whether the alteration of the vehicles complied with provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 and its order regarding emission levels.

If the conversion from three to four cyclinders was not in accordance with the law, then the registration of the vehicle would be suspended and the owner would be given sufficient time to rectify the change. However, pending this, the vehicle would bear a sticker which would state that the registration was suspended and would be granted permission only to shift the vehicle to a place of storage.
