The Sri Lankan government is implementing a Rs 557 million master plan in Wennappuwa for the conservation of the western and south western coastlines. The project is going to be implemented by the fisheries and aquatic resources development ministry. These coastlines are largely exposed to violent sea erosions with the onset of the south-west monsoons. To deal with this problem, the ministry is planning to construct surface treatment dams, says Milroy Fernando, deputy minister of fisheries and aquatic resources development. The master plan would also include beach nourishment to maintain the natural sand supply from the sea.
