Pollution destroys crops

the Gujarat State Pollution Control Board has been forced to shut down Unimark Remedies, a chemical plant situated on the Ahmedabad-Bagodra highway. Pollution from the chemical plant has destroyed wheat crops growing on at least 40 hectares of land. The plant had no provisions to treat its water and gaseous effluents before discharge. It had discharged about one metres deep polluted water in the area outside its premises, as a result of which the standing wheat crops burned down and the jowar crops were affected at the root level. The foul smelling gases, discharged by the plant caused headaches, parched lips and skin burn.

Despite objections raised by the local population against the pollution, the management did nothing. Therefore, the state pollution control board was forced to intervene.
