A vaccine developed &om genetically engineered cells has been found to eradicate tumours from the brains of laboratory rats. Developed by cancer scientists at the University of California in Los Angeles, US, the vaccine is expected to be tested on humans this year. Lead researcher Habib Fakhrai explained that the vaccine removes a biological disguise from the cancer cells, which makes them vulnerable to the attack launched by the body's immune system. The disguise, called transforming growth factor-beta, or TGF-b is secreted from cancers of the brain, breast, lung, colon and prostrate.
