Judgement of the National Green Tribunal regarding approval for construction of the capital city of Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh, 17/11/2017
Judgement of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Pandalaneni Srimannarayana & Others Vs State of Andhra Pradesh & Others dated 17/11/2017 regarding formation of a Green Field New Capital namely Amravati as it poses a serious threat to the environment.
NGT while refusing to set aside the environmental clearance dated 9th October 2015, granted to the Amaravati project included certain conditions as part of the environment clearance which includes: 1. No alteration of the river or natural storm water morphology, flow pattern and location by way of straightening shall be permitted 2. State should prepare a comprehensive City specific action Plan to mitigate impact of climate change with a view to achieve carbon neutrality 3. The 251 acres of forest land should be preserved as green lungs of the City and not to be diverted for nonforestry uses 4. All the hills and hillocks in the catchment area of Kondaveeti Vagu, its tributaries and other storm water drains/channels should be treated with intensive soil and water conservation measures.
