Nuclear power is not the answer to climate change mitigation

At the end of 2013, prominent scientists and pioneers of climate change studies published an open letter to the people of the world in the fight against climate change, and recommended the use of nuclear power generation. Japanese scientists and a former policy maker with the experiences of Fukushima nuclear accident, considered that their arguments contained debatable issues and would like to send out a response as a discussion paper on climate change and nuclear power. The topics discussed in the paper are: Probability of nuclear accidents; Comparison of the number of fatalities; Cost of nuclear power generation; The worst-case scenario - one that Japan was able to avoid; Introduction of nuclear power generation with coal power generation; Role of a new type of reactor; Potentials of achieving the Two degrees C target without nuclear power; and Conclusion: Policies without “Russian Roulette”.
