NEW DELHI: After months of deliberations, the Union Cabinet on Monday decided to fix an interim price of Rs.27 for a litre of sugarcane-extracted ethanol for blending with petrol.

However, the final price will be set on the recommendations of a committee of experts.

New Delhi: Indian Railways has planned to set up four bio-diesel plants to reduce its carbon footprint and take forward its experiment with non-conventional form of energy. It is already planting saplings of jatropha, one of the sources of bio-diesel, on pilot basis in partnership with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC).

Oil marketing companies (OMCs) will float tenders for ethanol procurement at Rs 27 per litre for a mandatory five per cent blending with petrol, once the Centre issues a notification in this regard.

New Delhi: Oil companies will pay an interim price of Rs 27 per litre for ethanol, which they will buy from the sugar mills for doping in petrol, and a final price will be fixed after an expert committee submits its report.

At a time when the ethanol-petrol blending programme has met with only partial success, government-controlled Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) will become the first petroleum company in the country to produce its own ethanol.

AS THE cement industry reels under high raw materials cost and reduced coal linkages, companies are exploring for alternative options such as rubber tyres and rice husk as substitutes for main inputs.

With petrol and diesel prices increasing by the day, focusing on alternative energy sources, especially bio-fuel, would be the logical step.

After CNG, the Indian Railways now wants to tap bio-diesel potential to cut down on its operational cost. The Ministry has decided to set up an integrated bio-diesel plant at Chennai. The plant will have a production capacity of 30 tonnes per day.

ITANAGAR, June 18: Governor Gen J J Singh, who is also the President of the NERIST Society, would inaugurate the Integrated Bio Diesel Reactor System of 250 litres capacity per day, sponsored by Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, at NERIST on June 22 next.
