NEW DELHI: Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh on Thursday recommended a moratorium on new units at 43 highly polluted industrial areas in the country.

The situation in Nalco on Wednesday became more serious due to the acute shortage of coal with only less than 30,000 MT of the stock left for the captive power plant at Angul. Without arranging this most important raw material, the management recently operated 240 new pots at the smelter plant.

The Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) will invest about Rs 9,000 crore in the State for developing power evacuation facility.

In the first phase, the central PSU will construct 765 KV sub-stations at Jharsuguda and Angul with an estimated cost of Rs 6,000 crore for evacuation of power from the new power plants coming up there. The projects are expected to be operational

ANGUL: After Nalco decided to import coal to bridge the shortfall, the depeeneing coal crisis led to shutdown of a 120 MW unit at its power plant here. Aluminium production at the smelter has also been curtailed due to the precipitating crisis.

ANGUL: The public consultation meeting of the Essar Power Limited, for its proposed 2,000 MW power plant in the area, evoked mixed responses from the people who would be affected by the project. The meeting was held here today near Paranga village.

ANGUL: Coal supply to Nalco power plant here from the Talcher coalfield has been enhanced against the daily linkage demand of 14,000 tonne enabling Nalco to build a comfortable stock.

ANGUL: The much-hyped Rajiv Gandhi Vidyut Karan Yojana (RGGVY) in Angul district has made little progress so far even as the deadline for completion of the project is nearing end. The Central programme was started in the distict in March 2007 and at present, only 80 of the targeted 1,625 villages have been electrified.
