NEW DELHI, May 26

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in a meeting organised at the Congress Bhawan here said that the Barak Valley people will get Rs 1000 crore if the electorate gives the Congress party 15 seats in the forthcoming Assembly election.

Gogoi said that he is aware about the problems of the Barak Valley. For this reason he has requested Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh for Rs 1000 crore.

SILCHAR, June 3: The stretch of National Highway 44 regarded as the lifeline of supply of Barak Valley, Mizoram, Tripura and East Manipur is now being threatened by slow but steady erosion caused by river Barak near Panchgram where the only industry of this valley, Cachar Paper Mill, is located.

GUWAHATI, March 16: Assam PWD Minister Ajanta Neog today informed the State Assembly that the Centre had already approved Rs 112 crore for the improvement of the 110-km National Highway-44 (Assam portion), considered the lifeline of the Barak Valley, and that the tendering process was under way in New Delhi. She said the single-lane highway would be made a two-lane one by 2012/13.

The tea industry has sought reduction of land revenue rates and cess on green leaf so that the gardens in Assam get a level playing field to compete with the tea gardens of the other parts of the country.
