Indiscriminate dumping of garbage within the town was forcibly prevented by the college lecturers, environmentalists and residents in a Durgapur locality this morning. Several garbage trucks were stranded as a result. Angry locals also assaulted the chairman of the respective borough committee when he allegedly tried to ignore the agitators. The civic body has decided to stop dumping waste in the disputed zone temporarily. The solid waste management plant of the civic body, however, is yet to be prepared although eight months have already passed.

MARGAO, JUNE 30 - Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco has moved the Sub-divisional Magistrate, Margao for a permanent order against dumping of garbage and waste at the Sonsodo dumpyard. The MLA has filed a petition in the Court of the Sub-divisional Magistrate, praying that for a stop to garbage dumping by the mmc. In his petition, he drew attention of the Court that the Sonsodo dump yard has turned out a nuisance to people residing in and around the dump yard with the Civic body failing to treat the waste in a scientific manner and under the Garbage management rules.

Plagued by unending series of stoppages by the local people, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is preparing to dump garbage at the landfill site in Sisdole by using police force, if necessary. The KMC is preparing to invoke the Essential Service Act, which forbids obstruction in collection, transport and management of garbage. "Earlier, too, the government had talked about invoking this Act. But now, it will be strictly enforced,' KMC chief executive Dinesh Thapaliya told Nepal Samacharpatra.

There is a clear danger of an epidemic hitting Kathmandu Valley that may possibly take a serious toll on the lives of its residents as heaps of stinking garbage remains littered in the pavements of the city's roads for more than two weeks now. The Department of Epidemiology and Disease Control has warned the government that the unmanaged garbage might trigger a serious epidemic in the city and put into risk the lives of its residents.

Shimla - Alarmed over serious environmental damage at the Kacchi Ghati green belt, the forest department today slapped a penalty of Rs 4.5 lakh on the erring Public Works Department (PWD). The PWD has also been sent written orders to stop the work at the site and take immediate steps to restore the damage already caused to the trees. Any further defiance of the orders will call for invoking legal options and also arrest of the officials, the forest department warned.
