Sri Lanka's biggest garbage mountain, growing in height day by day, at Bloemendhal Road, Colombo 13 has become a menace. It could explode if fire spreads to the methane gas emanating from the lower levels of the dump, the Colombo Municipal Council Public Health Department warned yesterday.
A recent fire in a section of the dump had aggravated an already bad health hazard, residents of the area complained yesterday (26).

The airport environment committee at its meeting today stressed the need to address two major problems ~ the bird and animal menace and the choked drainage system ~ both of which are causing hindrance in the safe operation of flights as well as damage to the runway.

In an renewed battle to tackle the mounting garbage problem, the Thimphu city corporation (TCC) will empty all recycle bins in the city tomorrow and urge the public to use them correctly by segregating waste. This step is an immediate action the city corporation is once more taking, after concerned agencies discussed solid waste management in a three-day conference from August 18.

The city government's decision to sell garbage to a private sector cement firm for production of electricity without inviting companies to tender for the contract and obtaining permission from the city council has raised serious questions about the transparency of the deal and environmental suitability of the project.

According to the agreement between the city government's enterprise and investment promotion department and the cement firm, the city government will earn less than half the money it was going to get earlier, Dawn has learnt.

Each person generates about a kilogramme of household waste everyday, according to the first national survey solid waste survey carried out in urban centres of Bhutan by the department of urban development and engineering services (DUDES).

The survey, which was conducted from November 2007 to January 2008, in 10 urban centres showed Phuentsholing as the highest centre, with each individual generating about 1.2 kg of waste. The lowest was recorded at Trashigang with 0.6 kg.

A Japanese team is now working in Bangladesh for this purpose and a memorandum of understanding, to this effect, is likely to be signed between the External Relations Division and the Japan government on August 22, said a top DCC engineer.

KOCHI: The Ernakulam Sessions Court prohibited the dumping of waste at Padiyath Basin waste collection yard of the Kochi Corporation near the Convent Junction.
