हर घर में नल से जल और चुनौतियां दुनिया भर में जल संकट गहराता जा रहा है औऱ देश में हालात अच्छे नही हैं. देश में करीब 60 करोड़ लोग ऐसे इलाकों में रहते है जहां पानी का संकट गहराता जा रहा है.. नीति आय़ोग के आकड़ें बताते हैं कि 2020 तक देश के 21 शहरों में ग्राउंड वॉटर खत्म हो सकता है...वहीं 2030 तक देश में पानी की मांग दोगुनी हो जायेगी औऱ देश की 40 फीसदी जनसंख्या को पीने का पानी मिलना मुश्किल होगा....

जीवन के लिए पंचतत्वों को आधार माना गया है। उनमें से एक तत्व पानी भी है। जल के बिना जीवन की कल्पना भी नहीं की जा सकती । अगर जल न होता तो सृष्टि का निर्माण भी संभव नही होता। जल का महत्व इस बात से भी समझा जा सकता है कि दुनिया की बड़ी-बड़ी सभ्यताएं नदियों के किनारे ही विकसित हुई और प्राचीन नगर नदियों के तट पर ही बसे। लेकिन आज विकास की अंधी दौड़ में प्राकृतिक संसाधनों का कोई मोल नहीं रह गया है। विलासिता की आड़ में मनुष्य ने जल का इतना दोहन कर लिया है कि आज दुनिया की आधी आबादी को पीने का स्वच्छ पानी तक मुहैया नहीं है। भारत भी इससे अछूता नहीं है और तमाम रिपोर्ट इस बात को मजबूती से दोहरा रही हैं कि
