Rescue workers waited with masks, stretchers and sheets for bodies as heavy earth moving equipment tried to clear debris of a giant chimney that collapsed Wednesday at the Korba power plant site of the Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO), killing at least 25 people and trapping many others.

KORBA (CHHATTISGARH): At least 20 labourers were killed and nearly 70 are feared trapped under debris after a chimney at an under-construction thermal power plant of the Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO) caved in here on Wednesday.

The off site emergency plan for chemical and harzardous industries in south Goa will now be part of the district Disaster Management Plan.

At least 25 people were crushed to death when an under-construction chimney at a new power plant being constructed at Bharat Aluminium Company (Balco) in Korba, 230 km from here, collapsed on Wednesday afternoon. Another 40 people are feared trapped in the debris.

ALUVA: Four persons were killed and many seriously injured when the concrete tank of a biogas plant at Edathala near Aluva exploded owing to a suspected pressure build-up, on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Lalu, 42, of Kochi; Safangiri, 30, of Kolkata, and Ibrahim, 75 of Lucknow, while one body is yet to be identified.

BHOPAL: A decision on an important matter concerning the dispute between Eveready Ltd. and the Madhya Pradesh Government over the property of Union Carbide India Limited was put off by the Chief Judicial Magistrate here on Wednesday.

The hearing in a contempt case filed by Eveready against the State was postponed following an appeal by the latter for time to file a rejoinder.
