THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: High levels of pollution, especially high ammonia, E-coli and iron content, was detected in the Vellayani lake by the students of Mannam Memorial Residential Higher Secondary School at Neeramankara who conducted a project study on the consequences of adopting the Vellayani Lake Drinking Water Scheme.

In a tell-tale reminder of the extent of pollution in water bodies in the City, at least 25,000 fish died due to contamination in Siddapura lake.

The fish had died three days ago, but they surfaced only on Wednesday.

The residents were in for a rude shock on Wednesday morning as thousands of dead fish were seen floating in the lake.

In the present study the pollution of a major North Bihar lake, the Kawar Wetland was studied with special reference to their effects on flora, fauna and local human population. The water of the lake is turbid, acidic and is having higher conductivity. The dissolved oxygen level was estimated as 7.6 mg/L, free CO2 6.3 mg/L, bicarbonate 80 mg/L, hardness 90 mg/L, chloride 17.0 mg/L.
