In the last four years, the Arunachal Pradesh Government has signed over 150 Memorandums of Agreement (MoA) with hydro power developers to generate more than 63,000 MW of power over the next 10 years. But of the 121 MoAs signed till December 2009, only 14 have been allotted through competitive bidding.

The 'mega dam' 2000 MW Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric Power Project set up in 2003 in Arunachal Pradesh is now one of the central political issues in Assam.

GUWAHATI, Nov 26: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today assured Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi of forming an expert committee to go into the apprehensions expressed by the public about the mega dam at the site of the Lower Subansiri hydroelectric power project at Gerukamukh in Dhemaji district.

According to an official release, Singh made the assurance at a meeting with Gogoi in New Delhi.

The Centre may order downstream basin study of every hydro electric project in the neighbouring State besides environment and biodiversity impact studies.

The hue and cry over mega dams in Arunachal Pradesh notwithstanding, the Centre has said 50 per cent of the works on the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project has been completed, while plans have been firmed up for implementation of Siang Upper (stage I) and Lower hydro projects.
