A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed here today for production of coal from Dongri Tal-2 coal block in district Singrauli, which has been allotted by the government of India to Madhya Pradesh Rajya Khanij Nigam and setting up a 660 MW thermal power plant based on it.

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Power Generation Corporation (HPGC) and Indraprastha Power Generation Corporation (IPGC) of the National Capital Territory of Delhi signed an agreement here on Friday for formation of a joint venture company (JVC) to develop a coal block in Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh.

The state BJP government, during its five- year tenure, has not taken any initiative to increase power generation, alleged the state Congress party here on Wednesday. During these years the government did not conduct survey for power generation projects and nor have taken any approval for any new power project, it added.

Concerns for energy conservation, developing sustainable energy sources and interest towards national energy security benefits combined with growing environmental pollution is necessitating the search for renewable energy sources. Of the renewable energy sources, biomass is highly flexible and the least cost alternative.

Efforts are on to increase electricity generation in the state thereby making it self-reliant in respect of its power requirements. In this direction, the two new units at Sarni would generate 500 megawatts electricity additionally in the next three years.

Energy Minister Dr Gauri Shankar Shejwar has asked 23 private sector companies to complete the projects entrusted to them soon. MoUs have already been signed with these companies for generation of 26 thousand 800 megawatt power.
