METTUR: The water level at Stanley reservoir dipped on Thursday as the inflows continued to be dismal.

With its waterspread area fast shrinking, an old church tower of a village, which got submerged when the dam was constructed in the early 20s, has started emerging. Poor inflows and heavy withdrawals have brought down the water level to 80.02 feet on Thursday.

CHENNAI: Water from the Stanley reservoir in Mettur will be released for samba cultivation in delta districts from August 7, as the inflow into the reservoir has increased due to heavy rain in the Cauvery catchments in Karnataka and Kerala, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi told the Assembly on Tuesday.

CHENNAI: The possibility of opening the Mettur reservoir for delta irrigation in the near future is ruled out as its storage is less than 30 tmc ft as against its capacity of 94 tmc (thousand million cubic) feet. The prospects of the reservoir getting heavy inflows in the coming weeks are bleak.

METTUR: A spotted deer was found dead in the forests at Palamalai near here on Sunday.

People in the area found the carcass of the animal and informed the forest officials.

The carcass was sent for post-mortem to the Mettur Veterinary hospital.
