NAGAPATTINAM: The authorities of the famous Velankanni church (Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Health) on Tuesday launched a solid waste management project at a cost of Rs. 1 crore in the campus to maintain hygiene and public health as lakhs of pilgrims from various parts of the country visit the church throughout the year.

NAGAPATTINAM: Several rural development works including creation and deepening of tanks and ponds, desilting of irrigation channels and laying of mud roads are in full swing in Nagapattinam district under the National Rural Employment Guarantee (NREG) scheme and nearly Rs.61 crore had so far been disbursed as wages to the workers for 2008-09, said Collector M. Jayaraman on Friday.
