The miners are drawing the sand from the entire river and selling the same and are transporting the sand through lorry and huge trucks.

Judgement of the National Green Tribunal (Southern Zonal Bench, Chennai) in the matter of S. Dhanapal & Others Vs Union of India & Others dated 20/11/2015 regarding Environmental Clearance (EC) dated 27-02-2014 granted for the proposal of quarrying of sand in 19.00.00 ha in River Vellar at S.F. No. 98(P) of Neivasal Village, Thittagudi Taluk, Cuddalore District, Tamil Nadu.

In the present study, efforts have been made to analyze selected physico-chemical characteristics of the water bodies of Uppanar estuary and Periyavaikkal region of Killai backwater area, Cuddalore District, Tamilnadu India. The comparative analytical study was conducted for one calendar year and water samplings were done on monthly basis. The parameters analyzed include rainfall, atmospheric temperature, water temperature, pH, salinity, turbidity, total dissolved solids, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand and hardness.

Hydrogeochemical investigations were carried out in and around Tummalapalle uranium mining area in order to assess hydrogeochemistry and its evolution of hydrochemical facies. Forty groundwater samples were analyzed for various physicochemical parameters like pH, electrical conductivity (EC), Ca, Mg, Na, K, Cl, HCO3, CO3, SO4, and F. The saturation indexes (SI) of minerals were calculated by employing Visual MINTEQ software. From this it is confirmed that most of the water samples were saturated with respect to carbonate minerals and under saturated with respect to sulfate minerals.

Order of the National Green Tribunal (Principal Bench, New Delhi) in the matter of K. Selvarangam Vs. The District Collector, Thiruvallur dated 17/04/2014 regarding illegal quarrying of sand is going on at Puthu Eri, Nayapakkam village, Thiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu. The Tribunal has come down heavily on District Collector, Cuddalore stating that "we do not think that it was appropriate for the District Collector to write such letters repeatedly and in a way block the progress of the proceedings before the Tribunal."
