First Unit To Achieve Positive Water Balance By Replenishing More Water Than Used

THE Indian arm of PepsiCo has become the first of its global units to put more water back into the environment than it consumes, the company said.

The Chief Secretary, Mr P. Prabhakaran, has been asked to inquire into the circumstances surrounding the reported remark by another top Government official expressing regret over the fate of the Coca-Cola unit at Plachimada in Palakkad.

Industry may soon have to pay a lot more for the water it uses. The Union government is in talks with various state governments to draft a model Bill that would lead to a multi-fold increase in water charges for industry, senior government officials told Business Standard.

The State Government has been requested to initiate legal measures to force Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages to pay compensation to the people of the Plachimada village in Palakkad district affected by the alleged environmental damage its bottling plant had inflicted on the area.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An organisation that had spearheaded the agitation against the Coca-Cola bottling plant at Plachimada village in Palakkad district has urged the government to initiate legal measures to force the multinational soft drink company to pay compensation to the people of the village affected by the environmental damage the bottling plant had brought to the area.

PALAKKAD: The drought situation in Palakkad district, which is reeling under scorching heat, may worsen with summer showers failing to gain momentum and many parts yet to receive showers.

The worsening situation calls for a permanent solution for the drought which accompanies the rise in mercury levels every year.

NEW DELHI: A Kerala Government panel's ruling on the damages Coca-Cola must pay villagers affected by pollution from its Palakkad bottling plant is likely to rekindle the debate on the compensation limits set by the Nuclear Liability Bill.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The high-power committee constituted by the Kerala government to study the extent of damage caused by the Coca-Cola plant at Plachimada in Palakkad district has recommended that a dedicated institution be set up to adjudicate individual claims for compensation.
