Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding pollution caused by Volkswagen and Skoda auto industry, 16/11/2018

Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Saloni Ailawadi Vs Union of India & Others dated 16/11/2018 regarding pollution caused by Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd. and Skoda Auto India Private Limited. The Applicant points out that in respect of engines manufactured by the said manufacturers, violation of prescribed norms had been found in the USA and Europe in as much as the manufacturers were employing deceit devices in such a way that the results of testing may not truly reflect the actual state-of-affairs in terms of compliance to norms/standards.

National Green Tribunal directs constitution of a joint team of representatives of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Ministry of Heavy Industries, ARAI and NEERI to examine the report of Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and give its opinion on the subject whether the manufacturers have exceeded the prescribed environmental norms and fair estimate of the damage caused to the environment, after considering the reply of the manufacturer. National Green Tribunal further directs the manufacturers to deposit a sum of Rs. 100 Crores within one month with the CPCB.
