Order of the Supreme Court of India regarding standards for thermal power plants, 07/09/2018

Order of the Supreme Court of India in the matter of M. C. Mehta Vs Union of India & Others dated 07/09/2018 regarding standards for thermal power plants which were to be implemented by December, 2017.

Additional Solicitor General has stated before the Supreme Court that NTPC owns 48 units that have installed capacity of 500 MW in dense/critically polluted areas. It is further stated that the Damodar Valley Corporation owns 9 such units in dense/critically polluted areas. It is stated that these 48+9=57 units are under the control of the Central Government. These units are expected to comply with emission standards for SOX and PM latest by 31st December, 2021. As far as NOX emission levels are concerned, it is stated that there is a pilot project that is being carried out by the NTPC and depending upon the result of the pilot project the NOX emission levels will come within the permissible limits by 31st December, 2022.
