Irrigating with arsenic contaminated groundwater in the Bengal Delta: a review of mitigation options

Literature on arsenic contamination of groundwater is replete with studies about the impacts of drinking arsenic contaminated water on human health as well as mitigation efforts in that context. Less is known, however, on the extent of use of arsenic rich groundwater for irrigation and effectiveness of arsenic remediation in agricultural contexts despite obvious implications for food and livelihood security and the possible adverse health and crop impacts associated with arsenic exposure via food chain contamination. This study, do a systematic review of all available evidence on the impact of mitigation measures aimed at reducing negative consequences of irrigating with arsenic rich water.
