Water scarcity may be a thing of the past in nearly 20 villages around Nallatur in Tiruvallur district. As part of its efforts to recharge depleting groundwater resources, the Water Resources Department (WRD) has proposed to construct another check-dam in Nallatur across the Kosasthalaiyar River.

The check-dam, which would store water that drains into the sea, would also help irrigation in the surrounding areas. The proposed facility would supply water to an additional 225 hectares of lands.

Chennai Metrowater will soon start monitoring groundwater level and quality in the expanded areas of Chennai Corporation. It will also intensify rainwater harvesting campaign and assess the impact of RWH structures in the newly-merged localities.

The monitoring would help in understanding the groundwater level in those areas where rainwater is not being harnessed properly. For this purpose, the water agency is in the process of identifying observational wells.

Residents of Perungudi, Madhavaram and Tiruvottiyur have voiced concern over the use of dumpyards in their localities to dispose of solid waste from many of the new areas of Chennai Corporation too

After its intensive campaign to popularise rainwater harvesting, Rain Centre is now promoting recycling of grey water in residential complexes using a natural and economical method.
