Ambient air quality monitoring was carried out in the vicinity of dam and nearby residential sites in four river basins in Karnataka with reference to SPM, RSPM, SO2 and NOx, employing Envirotech APM-460 Respirable Dust Sampler with provision to keep impingers having absorbing reagent. Further, three different methods of Air quality index (AQI) calculation on based on SPM and RSPM values were used to evaluate the prevailed ambient air quality in the near and surroundings areas at the time of dam constructional activities.

The Bandipur National Park situated in the Western Ghats of Karnataka State, is one of the biodiversity hotspots of the world. During recent years, this park has witnessed repeated fires, affecting considerable areas under vegetation.

It is very important to understand the ecological changes due to fire and other anthropogenic factors for conservation and management of biodiversity.

Quarry dust is known to alter the stomatal index of most of the plants studies. But in some plants the stomatal index remains unaffected or undergo little changes. Study carried out on selected plant species growing in the vicinity revealed foliar epidermal responses to quarry dust pollution which differed from species to species.

Stone quarrying is a small scale labor oriented industry which has provided jobs to many people but at the same time it has brought a host of environmental problems in the vicinity. The study is carried out to understand the ground water quality in the stone quarry area of Bangalore District.
