Leaseholders to submit papers on lease, fencing of lease areas, daily reports on transportation

In a bid to regulate iron ore extraction and transportation by the private sector in Goa, the Directorate of Mines and Geology on Monday issued two orders, directing all leaseholders to submit daily reports on transportation and askingd them to submit documents concerning the lease and fencing of the lease areas.

PANJIM: Forty-eight mining companies on Wednesday were granted more time till June 8 by the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) to submit documents pertaining to extraction and environment clearances, failing which their licences would be suspended.

These mining companies were issued show cause notices by GSPCB, last week for extracting ore beyond permissible limit and also to check the validity of environment clearance issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF). The notices were issued following High Court order on a petition filed by the Goa Foundation (GF).

PANJIM: The hearing of 40 mining firms, which were issued show cause notices by Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), will begin on Wednesday.

Total 24 mining companies were issued notices for extracting the ore beyond permissible capacity. GSPCB is inquiring into alleged excess production of iron ore since 2005.

PANJIM: Goa will have its own mining policy by May but the decision on whether to work on the draft policy or have a fresh document is yet to be taken by the government.

The State already has a draft policy which was formed in the year 2008 and pending notification. The policy was drafted much earlier to the noise about illegal mining trade in the State.

The waste treatment plant will now be finally commissioned at the Sonsodo garbage dumping site in July.

Fomento Green CEO Sridhar Kamat said that work on the proposed waste treatment plant at Sonsodo has got underway and the same is expected to be complete in all respects by July. “The civil works to set up the massive shed covering at the site has got underway. The plant and machinery is already ready and will be moved to the site upon completion of the civil works”, he added.

The notice has been sent to the company for allegedly violating courts order on the transport of iron ore

The Goa Bench of Bombay High Court today issued a contempt notice to Sesa Goa for allegedly violating its order on the transport of iron ore. Environmentalist Ramesh Gauns had moved the high court in this regard. Justice FM Reis issued notices to Sesa Goa, its Managing Director PK Mukherjee and Chief Operating Officer Pramod Unde.

The firms have been accused of extracting ore much beyond permissible limit

The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has issued show-cause notices to 40 mining firms for allegedly extracting ore much beyond permissible limit. The firms have been asked why appropriate action under relevant laws should not be initiated against them. They have been given three dates, April 11, 13 and 16, to appear before the board with relevant documents and submit their replies, a GSPCB official said today.

PANJIM: The Mormugao Port Trust witnessed a 27% decline in iron ore exports for the year 2011-12 as compared to the previous year, bringing down the total traffic handled at the port by 22%.

Revealing figures for the financial year 2011-12, Chairman of Mormugao Port Trust P Mara Pandiyan said that the decline was both due to internal problems like illegal mining as well as a global economic recession that all ports were facing. He however said that the operating income of the port increased by 4%.

PANJIM: In a major exercise, Mines and Geology department will now classify all the 90 mining leases based on their legal status by appointing two teams which will visit all the mines.

Director of Mines and Geology Prasanna Acharya said that all the mining leases would be coded in three different colours – green, brown and red.

MARGAO: Opposition is building up against the proposed Fatorda lake project with farmers and NGOs alike vehemently objecting to the project tooth and nail on Wednesday.

They conveyed a message loud and clear to the government and the Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardessai that they are firmly opposed to the proposed lake project. They raised apprehensions that the project would displace them from their ancestral fields.
