There are a total of 16 legacy waste dumpsites in the state and 263641 tonnes of legacy waste has been dumped at dumpsites. Around 83311.28 tonnes of legacy waste has been cleared from the dumpsites.

Two legacy waste dumpsites at Sunder Nagar and Sarkaghat have been cleared and in 14 legacy dumpsites bio mining has started. The state of Himachal Pradesh has set the time frame for clearing all legacy dumpsites by December 2023.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT), March 13, 2023 directed a joint committee to look into the matter of the ecological destruction of Kufri, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh.

The committee comprising Divisional Forest Officer, Shimla, Regional Officer, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh State Pollution Control Board and District Magistrate, Shimla would visit the site, collect relevant information and submit a factual as well as action taken, if any, report within two months.

Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Dr. Gurcharan Singh Vs State of Himachal Pradesh dated 02/01/2023.

The matter related to illegal mining being carried  out at village Kotti Khas, near tunnel no. 10 of Kalka Shimla railway track. Further, illegal mining was being carried out for the last four years on National Highways No 5, Solan district, Himachal Pradesh.

Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Avinash Vidhrohi Vs State of Himachal Pradesh dated 04/11/2022. Avinash Vidhrohi resident of village Deoli, tehsil Ghanari, district Una, Himachal Pradesh in his application to the NGT said that the PWD Department got pruning of all branches of 200 fruit bearing mango trees standing on Daulatpur-Gagret Guglehad road done through a contractor without obtaining requisite permission from the forest department.

Order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in the matter of Narayan Singh Vs State of Himachal Pradesh dated 31/10/2022.

The complaint is that one M/s. Sai Eternal Foundation is dumping construction waste and waste stone debris on the valley side causing damage to the environment and also creating health hazards to local people in the area. The said company is constructing a double lane in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh and in the process of said construction activities, construction waste and other waste is being dumped at the Dhalli Tunnel project down the valley side.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) directed that a high powered committee should look into the matter of illegal construction at Mohal Dhar Tuti Kandi, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. The committee should be headed by the Secretary, Urban Development, Himachal Pradesh. Remedial action in accordance with law must be taken, the NGT, October 17, 2022 said.
